Carnival vs Royal is the comparison a first family from Orlando actually types. Both lines sail from Port Canaveral. Both will put kids on a ship. They are not the same week, and they are not the same island day.
If you are driving from Orlando, this is the door. Not Miami. Fort Lauderdale is not a Carnival homeport in this winter window.
The two January weeks sitting next to each other
Star of the Seas, Sunday 17 January 2027, 7 nights Western Caribbean plus CocoCay from Port Canaveral, is the first-family sailing Coco plants. Costa Maya, Roatán, Cozumel, and CocoCay. Space is not held.
Mardi Gras, Saturday 16 January 2027, 7 nights Eastern Caribbean from the same port, is the Carnival comparison in the same week: Nassau, Half Moon Cay, Amber Cove, and Celebration Key. Space is not held.
Royal is the 7-night plus CocoCay default when the island day is not the whole trip. Carnival is the honest start if you already know Carnival. Coco does not promise Kids Sail Free on either sailing.
The island day is not interchangeable
CocoCay is Royal’s Bahamas island. Celebration Key is Carnival’s. CHEERS! does not work ashore at Celebration Key. That is a drink-package fact, not a vibe.

Size, kids under 12, and what Coco will not default
Star is Icon-class. Mardi Gras is Excel-class. Both are large ships. Coco will still talk through Star as the CocoCay week, then ask ages. Coco will not default a family with kids under 12 onto a 6,000-passenger ship in peak season unless you ask for that energy on purpose.
Disney Wish from the same port is the short Bahamas comparison (Castaway Cay plus Lookout Cay) when quieter or character time is the point. Disney is not Carnival, NCL, or MSC.
